Dead While Alive

by Mike Vardy

“Now it’s over, I’m dead, and I haven’t done anything that I want. Or, I’m still alive and there’s nothing I want to do.” – They Might Be Giants, “Dead” (from the album “Flood”)

I had a conversation with someone at a campfire this weekend and the idea that despite some people make a great deal of money doing what they do, they still complain. It brought this lyric to mind because I believe the reason they complain is because they are doing something that they don’t want to do. The money isn’t enough.

That’s why I left Costco (a great employer). That’s why I decided to jump into being a full-time writer and productivityist.

I didn’t want to be dead while I was still alive.

Yet there are so many others out there who are…whether they work in a cubicle or not.
